  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar (for sprinkling on top)
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1 tsp milk (for top)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (or vegan butter, for icing)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (for icing)
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, sea salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until crumbly.
  4. Stir in milk and molasses until combined.
  5. Form the dough into a circle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper if desired.
  6. Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar.
  7. Cut into wedges and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Optionally top with icing made from powdered sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla.
